The top 10 films of 2010

It was a rough year to be a movie fan. Not because of a lack of great options—I haven't seen so many films I've loved in a single year in quite some time—but because it was almost impossible to talk about great movies without running into someone who felt disappointed, annoyed or blasé about the exact same titles you loved.

Blame the growing influence of Internet culture, where hype turns to backlash and then reconsideration at faster speeds than ever before. In the rapid-fire world of Facebook and Twitter, a movie can go from masterpiece to overrated to underappreciated in a single weekend. But the best movies are built to withstand snap judgments and knee-jerk cynicism. And a healthy diversity of opinion only strengthens our appreciation and understanding of the movies we love.

So, in the spirit of both debate and appreciation, here are my picks for the best movies of 2010.
