Vincent Freeman/Jerome Morrow, “Gattaca”
Long before he directed “In Time,” filmmaker Andrew Niccol gave life to “Gattaca,” a vision of the future in which social class is determined not through wealth or time, but through scientifically-modified and perfected DNA. Vincent Freeman (Ethan Hawke) has long dreamt of becoming an astronaut, but there’s a catch: He was born without enriched DNA, and due to a heart defect he is projected to live only 30 years. In a world populated by superhumans, Vincent’s “average” DNA is a disqualifier. So he makes a business arrangement with Jerome Morrow (Jude Law), a one-time star athlete with flawless DNA left paralyzed from the waist down after a car accident. Vincent buys Jerome’s identity, and proceeds to use his hair, blood and urine to fool the space agency’s genetic sensors. A superhuman is born.
