"Being John Malkovich"
Puppeteer-turned-office-drone Craig (John Cusack) discovers a strange portal in his building that plunks whoever steps into it in the body of idiosyncratic god-among-character-actors John Malkovich. After 15 minutes, the Malkovich-snatcher is unceremoniously dumped out onto the New Jersey Turnpike.
For Craig, this represents the chance for some truly radical puppeteering, while Craig’s co-worker Maxine (Catherine Keener) exploits the Malkovich portal for commercial gain. Underneath the surrealism, writer Charlie Kaufman makes a melancholy suggestion: many of us, unhappy in our own skin, yearn to attain Malkovich-level coolness.
