"The Beaver" (May 6)
Sequel/remake/adaptation? Original!
In 3D? No
What's at stake: It sounds like a bad joke—Mel Gibson stars as a man whose mental breakdown causes him to communicate exclusively through a beaver hand puppet. Gibson has only starred in one other movie since 2002's "Signs" and he's now far more famous for his off screen antics. That's a lot of baggage for this quirky mid-life crisis comedy-drama—Jodie Foster's first directing effort 1995's "Home for the Holidays."
Chance of success: Will Mad Mel lure in curious moviegoers or drive them away? The release plan is cautious—opening in limited theaters before going wider on May 20—and while the early reviews from the South by Southwest film festival weren't raves, they weren't disastrous either.
