Eight acts, eight sides of Austin's annual music bash
If you’ve read anything about this year’s South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival, it probably mentioned acts like Stone Temple Pilots, Muse and Snoop Dogg—but probably not the Melismatics (pictured), Young Scolla, or Walking Sleep. With more and more big names booking SXSW gigs, it’s easy to forget that the festival’s original purpose was to serve as a platform for less well-known artists—a chance for indie-label and unsigned bands to network with fellow musicians, and strut their stuff for crowds of label reps, publicists, journalists, bloggers and fans.
With that in mind, Metromix set out at SXSW 2010 to talk to some of the artists who are the real lifeblood of the festival—not the ones playing NPR showcases and Perez Hilton parties, but the ones hustling to and from gigs in dive bars, parking lots, Moose Lodges and everywhere in between.
