Unsung and up-and-coming heroines of the six-string
Pioneers like Joan Jett, Heart's Nancy Wilson, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and more kicked down the doors for women who just want to bash their axes with stomping rock and hypnotic pop. In turn, they inspired women such as Throwing Muses' Kristin Hersh and Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein, who have gone on to blaze trails for the next generation of six-string standouts (like Marnie Stern, pictured) also included in this star-studded list. Some you may have heard, and some you may have yet to experience. But all are shredding what's left of the envelope that once marginalized female guitarists in a still mostly male-dominated music industry.—Scott Thill, Special to Metromix
