Tucson's best: hot dog stands

July is National Hot Dog Month. And while we’re not sure if this is federally recognized or just a ploy thought up by Wienerschnitzel and the members of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, we think it’s delightful.

After all, hot dogs are a symbol of our national heritage. According to the aforementioned council, Americans consumed 150 million hot dogs on July 4 alone. (Enough, if tacked together in some kind of makeshift sausage rope, to stretch from Washington D.C. to Las Angeles more than five times.)

And in Tucson, hot dogs are a symbol of our inherent Mexican-ness. The Sonoran hot dog—said to have originated in Hermosillo, Mexico—is rising in popularity and (in our opinion) is second only to the horse-intestine hot dogs of Kazakhstan.

And since hot dogs come in many varieties, it’s no surprise that their creators—Mario Cordova of Taqueria Sammy is pictured here—do as well. The people out on the streets every day are often the most interesting, so we decided to seek out the best and most creative street dog vendors in town.—Andi Berlin, Special to Metromix
